Characteristics Of the Restoration Tragedy:-   ⚫ Love, Beauty, Chivalary and Praise:-  The Heroic Tragedy was Highly Influenced by the Heroic poems. Love, Beauty and Chivalary are Themes of Heroic Play.  Hobbes Writes,  "The Work of the Heroic poem is to raise admiration for three virtues-chivalary, love and beauty."  It is perceived that the Heroic Tragedies mainly deal with Love and Honour. Love is considered superior to all virtues in the Heroic plays.

Anthony in "All for Love" renounces all family, friends country and Kingdom for Love sake. Love is a Heroic passion, Heroic love, purifies.   The Hero of all mean desires and makes him a proper object of Admiration.  ⚫ Superb Characters:-   The Hero of a Heroic play is brave and the heroine is virtuous and fair.   David Daichess writes,

"The Heroic play demands heroic characters not tragic heroes with fatal flaws, not confused idealist like Brutus trapped sensibilities like "Hamlet".  ⚫ Artificiality in the Heroic Tragedy:-   The First striking aspects of the Heroic Tragedy is Artificiality. It creates a mechanical world of its own in which life is lived at a hightened Level and to which real suffering can Hardly Penetrate. In This tragedy, Reality is Kept out. It can be said that the Heroic tragedies creates an escape world for a Degenerate Aristocracy and Provides them with vicarious satisfaction of doing great deeds.

Major Dramatist of the Heroic Tragedy:-   (i) John Dryden(1631-1700):-  Earlier Attempts in Heroic Tragedy were Made by orrey and George Cartwright dryden is called the supreme protagonist of the Heroic Plays. He Wrote Many Heroic Plays Among which 'Aurangzebe' and 'Conquest of Granda', Tyrannic Love are the best.  All the Heroic Plays are Built upon a set Plan. The Heroes of this Heroic Plays have super Human Qualities endowed with super human Ideals.

The Heroines of these Plays have unsurpassed constency (constant Lover) and Beauty.   There is a Fact of Passion and the Emotional scenes in them. It is True that Dryden Genius was not Dramatic. He Took to Play Writing because it was the shortest Literary way to fame and Fortune.   According to R. Garnett, "Dryden wanted reputation money and court Favour and these Endusements(Enticer) Directed him to the most popular an Luc ative(Profitable) Department of muses Province(states).

(ii) Thomas Outway(1651-1685):-  Outway wrote a number or Heroic Plays. He is well known for his true Plays 'The Orphan' and Venice preserved. He strikes the Note of Deep pathos which is distinguishing Features.   His Plays has a Calmness of Tone. Venice Preserved is his Finest work. Here in the Tragedy is on a Grandeur Scale Than in The Orphan. He Has got genuine Passion in His heroic Plays.  (iii) Nathaniel Lee(1655-1692):-

Lee's Life is the usual tale Of Mishops(accident) miseries and Drunkness. He Wrote several Heroic Tragedies of which Nero, The Rival Queens and sophonisha are the best. In the plays of Lee structure is Weak. The Psychology Almost Always Rudimentary(Undeveloped). The style Is full of bombast and conceits. He rejoiced in Ambitious subjects and in Great Historical Personages.  (iv) Nicholas Rowe (1673-1718):-  Rowe was also popular writer of the heroic plays. His best Known Heroic Tragedies are 'Tamerlaine', The Fair penitant (Repent) and Jane shore.

Dr. samuel jonson says of him, Rowe's reputation comes from the reasonableness (Genuine) of some his scenes, The Elegance (Smartness) of his diction and the suarity of his verse.   His Tragedies are the best examples of she-Tragedy.  Conclusion  It can be concluded that Heroic Tragedies or Heroic Plays came into existence when the aristocrate suffered from a sense of Futility and Moral in security. Those plays were written for romance and Heroism. John dryden regarded the Heroic play. "As an Imitation in Little of a Heroic Poem."
