Table of contents - Introduction	 Works of Christopher Marlowe	  Introduction Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593), poet and playwright, was the son of John and Catherine Marlowe. He was born in Canterbury in 1564. His father was a shoemaker.  Given the fact that his father was a man of humble means and meagre resources, Christopher’s achieving higher education was most improbable. However, the child Christopher had a sharp intellect and a deep interest for reading and knowing.

Hereceived his early education at The King’s School, Canterbury.  The sheer spark of brilliance won him anArchbishop Parker Scholarship and led him to Corpus Christi College in the University of Cambridge. This Scholarship was sponsored by a group of charitable Elizabethans who funded the boys’coming frompoor families; the purpose was to foster talent in poor boys. In 1584, Marlow graduated as Bachelor of Arts.  The Parker Scholarship was awarded for three years and could be extended for another three yearson condition that the student would certify to undertake the Holy orders.

Marlowe was not the one to missthis opportunity. He fulfilled this condition and his scholarship was extended for the next three years. Works of Christopher Marlowe Christopher Marlowe wrote his first drama “Dido, Queen of Carthage”; the Children of the Chapel, a troupe of boy actors, performed it from 1587 to 1593. It was published  later, in 1594. In 1587, his second play “Tamburlaine the Great” was performed on a London stage.  This was the first English play written in blank verse, and was based on the story of a conqueror, Tamburlaine, who rose from being a shepherd to being a warlord.  It was a resounding success and Marlowe followed it with another popular play “The Jew of Malta,”

written from 1589 to 1590. It was performed in 1592 before the publication of “Dido, Queen of Carthage.”  Later, Marlowe published “Edward the Second,” “The Massacre at Paris,” and his masterpiece “Dr. Faustus” in quick succession. Marlowe’s plays received a great deal of success during the Elizabethan period. Though he wrote poetry too, Marlowe is considered a greater playwright than poet.
