They can be vivid and realistic, or bizarre and surreal. The mechanism behind why we dream is still not fully understood, but there are many theories that attempt to explain it. One of the earliest and most famous theories is the Wish Fulfilment Theory of Dreams, proposed by Sigmund Freud.

Freud wish fulfillment dream theory The wish-fulfillment theory of dreams was first proposed by Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. According to Freud, dreams are the result of repressed desires and emotions that are not expressed in waking life. In other words, dreams are a way for our subconscious mind to express its deepest desires and fears, which are often hidden from our conscious mind. Freud believed that dreams have two parts: the manifest content and the latent content.

Types of dreams pdf The manifest content is what we actually experience in our dreams - the images, sounds, and sensations that we perceive. The latent content, on the other hand, is the underlying meaning of the dream. It is the repressed desire or emotion that the dream is trying to express. Freud believed that the purpose of dreams is to allow us to express our repressed desires and emotions in a safe and acceptable way. He argued that if we were to express these desires and emotions in waking life, we would be met with social and moral disapproval. Therefore, our subconscious mind creates a symbolic representation of these desires and emotions in the form of a dream. Freud believed that dreams are a manifestation of the unconscious mind's desire to satisfy our innermost

needs and wants. Dreams, in his view, were like a form of wish-fulfillment. When we dream, we are free from the constraints of waking reality and can indulge in our most cherished fantasies and desires. Dreams allow us to experience the satisfaction of our deepest desires without fear of societal judgment or consequences. Freud also believed that dreams had a hidden symbolic meaning that needed to be interpreted. He believed that dreams consisted of two parts: the manifest content and the latent content. The manifest content is the actual content of the dream, while the latent content is the hidden, symbolic meaning behind it.

According to Freud, the latent content reveals the true meaning of the dream, which is usually a repressed desire or wish. For example, suppose you have a dream about flying. The manifest content of the dream is that you are flying through the air. However, the latent content of the dream might reveal that you have a deep desire to escape from a difficult situation or to rise above your problems. Flying in the dream represents the fulfillment of this desire, even if it is only temporary and illusory. Freud's Wish Fulfilment Theory of Dreams has been criticized for being overly simplistic and reductionist. Critics argue that dreams are not always about wish-fulfillment and that they can have a variety of meanings and functions.

For example, some dreams may be the result of random neural activity in the brain, while others may be a way for the brain to process and consolidate memories and experiences. Despite its criticisms, Freud's theory has had a significant impact on our understanding of dreams and the unconscious mind. His ideas about the importance of the unconscious mind and the symbolic nature of dreams have influenced many psychologists and therapists. Freud's techniques of dream analysis and free association are still used today in psychotherapy to help people explore and understand their innermost desires and fears.

Conclusion to Mechanism of dreams and wish fulfilment theory of dreams pdf notes Dreams are a fascinating and mysterious aspect of human experience. While the mechanism behind why we dream is still not fully understood, Freud's Wish Fulfilment Theory of Dreams provides one possible explanation. According to this theory, dreams are a way for our unconscious mind to fulfill our deepest desires and wishes.
