Wordsworth who was stricly against the Neo Classicism.  Publication of Lyrical Ballads by William Wordsworth in 1798 started the new era of romanticism. As it was revival of romanticism it was called neo romanticism. It started in 1798 and lasted till 1830.  Characteristics of Romanticism Break from classicism - Wordsworth's and coleridge's Poetry was against neo classicism of the 18th century. They Revolted against the set rules of writing poetry, Realism and intellectualism.  Love for nature And country life - Neo classical poets loved artificial life of Urban; But Wordsworth, keats and Shelley loved to present the beauty of nature and Rural Life.

Escape to the middle ages - Coleridge and keats escaped to the old middle ages where they found beauty and joy to enrich their souls.  They felt strange blending of beauty and curiosity in the past. John keats Poem 'ode to a Gracian urn' is an example of it.  Love for freedom - The Romantic poets were against the exploitation of the poor in the  18th century. Shelly's Poem 'Prometheus unbound' show his deep love for mankind and liberty. Dominance of emotion and Imagination- The Romantic period believed that emotion was a form of intelligence, and art was a path to transcendence.

As a result of the change in beliefs, Romantic poetry is often characterized by nature, imagination, memory, and wisdom.  Imagination acts as a source of creativity, and allows us to see what is not immediately apparent. The Romantics believed that we could discover the imagination in nature, which often resulted in a harmony of the two. Love for supernatural - Coleridge and keats introduced supernatural elements like Ghosts and Spirits in their Poetry. Subjective Writing - Romantic-period writers stress the imaginative and subjective side of human nature.  Characters' thoughts, feelings, inner struggles, opinions, dreams, passions and hopes reign supreme.

Lyricism - During the Romantic Movement the poetry once more became musical, non-intellectual, sensuous and impassioned.  This free expression of feeling demanded a lyrical mode of expression. Shelley gave a new scope, richness and fervor to the lyrical verse.  The Romantics of Europe and England were the lyrists of the first order. This quality kept it fresh and alive, despite all changes in taste and outlook.
