Introduction The term University wits refer to a group of young dramatist of the early Elizabethan period who were associated with the universities of Cambridge and oxford.  University Wits consisted of writers like John Lyly , George peel , Robert Green , Thomas Nash , Thomas Lodge , Thomas Kyd and Christopher Marlowe.  These young men had certain things in common all of them were qualified with universities degrees.  All were actors and playwrights. They knew the stage and understood the attitude of the audience which craved for stories of love and brave spectacles.  They made Elizabethan drama more literary and more dramatic--and they also had an important influence on both private and public theaters because they worked for each. Shakespeare started his career, saw a radical transformation in popular drama.  This group of six feisty, well- educated men chose to write for the public stage, taking over native traditions. Names of University wits Member and their contribution to shakespeare and english language The following are the names of University wits Member John Lyly : It was John Lyly a courtier who made notable contribution to the development of English comedy. This comedian are romantics as well as witty. He selected classical themes and stories for his plays. He himself was a courtier. He wrote eight plays in all.

They are- Campaspe, Sapho and Phao, Gallathea, Endymion,The Man in the Moon, Midas, Mother Bombie, Love's Metamorphosis and The Woman in the Moon. Lyly's contribution to English drama is very important. He was a comic playwright.  He gave shape to the romantic comedy. Suitable blank verse was used in his comedies.  He added to drama the qualities of delicacy, grace, charm and subtlety. He is well known as an originator of Euphuistic style of prose writing. Christopher Marlowe: The most important university dramatist among the university wits were undoubtedly Christopher Marlowe, he enriched the Elizabethan plays not only by his great tragedies like Tamburlaine Doctor Faustus, Jew of Malta etc but also by introducing the Blank verse as a powerful media.

Marlowe demonstrated that if used effectively. The Blank Verse could became an appropriate medium for tragedies . He inspired Shakespear’s Hamlet and the later Jacobean cult of Revenge plays particularly these of Webster. Thomas Lodge: Thomas Lodge wrote a chronicle play called the wounds of Civil War. This play perhaps influenced Shakespeare later Chronicle plays. Lodge also wrote another play called a looking glass for London and England. Thomas Nash: Thomas Nash was a singer of Saints John college Cambridge. He is noted to have written summer’s last will and Taskeman which was acted in 1592 and perhaps he too also contributed some part to Marlowe’s Dido Queen of carthage , and to a last play called the Eyle of Dogs.

Nash is however more famous as a Pampheter and a story writer particularly. The unfortunate Traveller. Robert Green: Greene was a playwright and novelist. He attained excellence in both the arts. His best plays are - The Comical History of Alphonsus, King of Aragon, Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay and James IV.  Robert Green was a master of the art of plot making and he was later successfully followed by Shakespeare skill in Constructing plot particularly in the Merchant of Venice. A midsummer’s night dream. With him the love story became central in the art of drama. He contributed much to the development of romantic comedy.

George Peel: George peel was another university wit who wrote comedy plays which are both humorous and satirical in style.   His The Old Wives Tales is the first English play that satirizes the romantic dramas popular at the time. His important plays are Arraignment of Pairs, The Battle of Alcazar, The Famous Chronicle of King Edward the First, The Love of King David and Fair Bethsabe and The Old Wives Tales. As a humorist he showed the way to Shakespeare. He widened the range of English dramas. conclusion Thus the University Wits contributed much to the English drama. They prepared the ground for coming drama.
